Azimuth: The Compass City Game

A hidden city sits in the middle of the compass. Every arrow points from it to a real city, at its true bearing.

Pick a map. Each one has its own cities, its own distances and 100 levels (200 for the World and Europe), from famous capitals to villages only the locals know.

World and Europe

World 200 levels From Reykjavik to Suva, this pack spans every inhabited continent, so the arrows can stretch across thousands of kilometres. Europe 200 levels Capitals and historic cities from Reykjavik to Istanbul, with most arrows under a few thousand kilometres.

Countries

United Kingdom 100 levels Britain is tall and narrow, so north-south arrows tell you far more than east-west ones. United States 100 levels Coast to coast, arrows here can cross the whole continent. Germany 100 levels From the North Sea ports of Hamburg and Bremen to the Alpine towns of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berchtesgaden. France 100 levels The hexagon makes bearings easy to picture: Paris sits in the north, Marseille and Nice on the Mediterranean, Brest at the western tip. Spain 100 levels Madrid sits almost in the middle of the peninsula, so its arrow points to the centre from nearly anywhere. Italy 100 levels The boot runs from north-west to south-east, so arrows along the peninsula mostly point one of those two ways. Netherlands 100 levels The whole country fits in a few hundred kilometres, so distances are short and angles do the work. Switzerland 100 levels The Alps cut the country in two: Lugano and Locarno lie south of them, Geneva sits at the far western tip. Denmark 100 levels The Jutland peninsula and hundreds of islands, from Skagen at the northern tip to Gedser in the south. Norway 100 levels A very long country: from Oslo in the south the cities run up the coast past the Arctic Circle to Tromsø, Hammerfest and Kirkenes. Sweden 100 levels Sweden stretches from Ystad on the southern coast to Kiruna and Karesuando far above the Arctic Circle.

How to Play Azimuth

Azimuth is a geography game about direction. A hidden city sits in the middle of a compass, and arrows point from it to real cities at their true compass bearing - their azimuth. Read the angles, picture the map, and name the city in the middle. Every wrong guess is added to the compass as a red arrow, so each miss gives you another clue.

What is an azimuth?

An azimuth is the angle between north and the direction to something, measured clockwise: 0 degrees is north, 90 is east, 180 is south and 270 is west. Surveyors and navigators use azimuths to fix a position from known landmarks - a technique called resection. Azimuth turns that into a game: the landmarks are real cities, and your position is the hidden city.

Frequently asked questions

How do the arrows work?

Each arrow starts at the hidden city and points toward a real city along the shortest route over the globe. An arrow pointing straight up means that city is due north of the hidden one.

What changes between the difficulty levels?

Easy and Medium show the distance to each arrow city. Hard shows angles only. Expert gives you four arrows and Master only three, and the hidden cities get less famous as you climb.

What happens when I guess wrong?

Your guess is added to the compass as a red arrow, showing the direction from the hidden city to the city you guessed. The list below the compass also tells you which way the hidden city lies from your guess.

Can a level have two right answers?

No. Every puzzle is checked before you see it: no other city in the pack matches all of the arrows, so there is always exactly one answer.
