How to play Planet Spotter

  1. 1

    Spin the Solar System

Drag to turn the 3D view and zoom in on any planet. The planets keep moving along their orbits, just slower while a question is open.

  2. 2

    Answer 10 questions

Find a planet with the labels off, solve a riddle like "Which planet is the hottest?" or pick the bigger of two glowing planets.

  3. 3

    Be quick, keep a streak

Every right answer scores 100, plus up to 50 for speed. Three in a row multiply your points by 1.2, five in a row by 1.5.

About Planet Spotter

Planet Spotter is a free space game that turns the Solar System into a playground. Instead of reading a list, you look for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune as they orbit the Sun in 3D, and learn something new after every answer.

It works for kids and adults alike: the questions mix easy finds with trickier riddles about moons, days and temperatures, and the Real sizes button shows just how tiny Earth is next to Jupiter.

Frequently asked questions

Is Planet Spotter free?

Yes. You can play as often as you like without an account. With a player name your best score appears on the leaderboard.

How are points scored?

A right answer is worth 100, plus up to 50 for speed. A streak of 3 multiplies it by 1.2 and a streak of 5 by 1.5. Using a hint halves the points for that question.

Are the planet sizes to scale?

In the game view the small planets are drawn bigger so you can tap them. Switch to Real sizes to see the planets at their true size compared with each other. The Sun and the distances stay out of scale, or Neptune would be far off screen.

Which planet is the hottest?

Venus, at about 464 °C on average. Mercury is closer to the Sun, but it has no thick atmosphere to trap the heat.

How many moons does Saturn have?

274 known moons, the most of any planet. Jupiter comes second with more than 95.
