How to Read a Map
Eight short lessons that take you from "north is up" to reading a contour interval and a six-figure grid reference. Free, interactive, and no account needed.
Reading a map means answering four questions about it: where am I, which way am I facing, how far away is that, and what is this symbol. Every map you will ever pick up answers those four with the same small set of tools, and once you can find them on one map you can find them on any map.
Start with the title and the legend, which tell you what the map is for and what its marks mean. Find the north arrow so you know which way it is oriented. Find the scale so you can turn centimetres into kilometres. Then find the grid or the coordinates, so you can describe a point precisely enough for someone else to find it too. The lessons below take those in order.

To read a map, start with its legend and its scale. The legend tells you what the symbols, colours and line styles stand for; the scale tells you how distance on the map relates to distance on the ground, so a 1:50,000 map means one centimetre on paper is 500 metres in reality. The north arrow tells you how the map is oriented, which is usually but not always with north at the top. Coordinates or a grid let you name an exact point: latitude and longitude work anywhere on Earth, while national grids like the Ordnance Survey grid use eastings and northings instead. On topographic maps, contour lines join points of equal height, and how tightly they are packed tells you how steep the ground is. Every flat map of a round planet distorts something, so knowing which projection you are looking at tells you which of shape, area, distance or direction you can trust.
Common questions about reading maps
What are the basic map reading skills?
Five things cover most of it: reading the legend so you know what the symbols mean, using the scale to convert map distance into real distance, using the north arrow to orient the map, reading coordinates or a grid reference to name an exact point, and reading contour lines to understand the shape of the ground. Each of those is one lesson on this page.
How do I start reading a map I have never seen before?
Read the title first, because it tells you what the map is for and therefore what it deliberately leaves out. Then find the legend, the scale and the north arrow, usually in a corner or along an edge. Only then start looking at the map itself. Skipping those three is the most common reason a map seems confusing.
Is north always at the top of a map?
Usually, by convention, but not always. That is exactly why maps carry a north arrow or a compass rose. Historical maps, some tourist and transit maps, and many maps of the southern hemisphere are oriented differently. Always check the arrow rather than assuming.
What is the difference between a map and a plan?
It is mostly a matter of scale. A plan covers a small area at a large scale, like a building or a single field, and can show it almost exactly. A map covers a larger area at a smaller scale, which forces it to simplify, symbolise and distort. The larger the area, the more the curvature of the Earth also has to be dealt with by a projection.
