Map Scale and Distance

A map is the world shrunk by a known amount. The scale tells you by how much, which means you can measure anything on it and get a real answer in kilometres.

What scale actually means

Scale is the ratio between a distance on the map and the same distance on the ground. Written as 1:50,000, it says that one unit on the map is 50,000 of those units in reality. The units cancel out, so it does not matter whether you measure in centimetres or inches: one centimetre on the map is 50,000 centimetres on the ground, which is 500 metres, and one inch is 50,000 inches, which is a little under eight tenths of a mile.

That single number is the difference between a map and a picture. A picture of a coastline is decorative; a map of it lets you answer how far, how long it will take, and whether you can get there before dark.

The three ways scale is written

Most maps carry the scale in more than one form, usually tucked into a margin or a corner. A ratio scale is the bare numbers, 1:50,000. A verbal scale spells it out, "one centimetre to 500 metres". A scale bar draws it, as a short ruler marked in real-world units.

The bar is the one to trust when a map has been photocopied, resized or shown on a screen. Resizing breaks the ratio, because the paper distance changes while the printed number does not. The bar shrinks or grows along with the map, so it stays correct.

How to measure distance on a map

For a straight line between two points, this takes about fifteen seconds.

  1. Measure on the map Put a ruler between the two points and read the distance in centimetres. For a winding road, lay a piece of string along it first, then straighten the string against the ruler.
  2. Read the scale Find the ratio in the margin. Say it is 1:50,000.
  3. Multiply Multiply your measurement by the second number of the ratio. Four centimetres times 50,000 is 200,000 centimetres.
  4. Convert to something useful Divide by 100 for metres, then by 1,000 for kilometres. 200,000 cm is 2,000 m, which is 2 km.
  5. Sanity check against the bar Hold your ruler measurement against the scale bar. If the two answers disagree, the map has probably been resized and the bar is the one to believe.

Worked example

Two villages are 7 cm apart on a 1:25,000 map. How far apart are they really?

  • 7 cm × 25,000 = 175,000 cm
  • 175,000 ÷ 100 = 1,750 m
  • 1,750 ÷ 1,000 = 1.75 km

They are 1.75 km apart, or a little over a mile.

Large scale and small scale, the wrong way round

This is the part that trips people up, and it trips up plenty of adults too. A large-scale map shows a small area. A small-scale map shows a large area. It sounds backwards until you look at the ratio as the fraction it really is.

1:10,000 is the fraction one ten-thousandth. 1:1,000,000 is one millionth. One ten-thousandth is the larger number, so 1:10,000 is the larger scale, and it is the one that shows individual streets rather than whole countries. Think of it as how large each real thing is drawn, not how large an area is covered.

Common scales and what they are used for

Scales cluster around a handful of conventional values, because each suits a particular job.

Hiking maps sit at 1:25,000 because that is roughly where individual field boundaries and footpaths stay legible.

Why do some maps have no scale?

Because the scale would not be constant across them. Many world maps and schematic maps, such as transit diagrams, distort distance so heavily that a single scale bar would be misleading everywhere except one line or point. That is a property of the projection rather than an oversight.
