Our new daily game Country Grid gives you nine empty squares and six clues. Every square sits where a row meets a column, and the country you put there has to satisfy both at once.
"Landlocked" crossed with "Europe" is easy. "Flag has black" crossed with "Over 1M km2" is where it starts to hurt.
How it works
- Tap an empty square and name a country that matches its row clue and its column clue.
- You get nine guesses for nine squares, so a wrong answer costs you a square.
- Each country can only be used once per grid.
- Clues cover continents, borders, official languages, flag colours, island and landlocked countries, population, area, first letter, the EU, the euro and Olympic hosts.
Lower is better
This is the part that makes it a different game. Every correct answer scores the percentage of players who picked the same country, and your total is the number you are trying to keep down.
France in a "borders Germany" square costs you a lot of points, because almost everyone thinks of France. Luxembourg costs almost nothing. An empty square costs a flat 100 - so a perfect grid of obvious answers can still lose to a half-empty grid of obscure ones.

Because the score comes from real answers, we can show you them. The answers page breaks down every square from a given day: which countries people named, and what share of players named each one. It is the fastest way to find out whether your clever answer was actually clever.
There is also a daily leaderboard, where the lowest score wins, plus all-time champions, the longest streaks and the most perfect grids.
One grid a day, the same for everyone
The grid rotates at midnight UTC and everyone in the world plays the same one. You get a single run at it, so there is no retrying until it looks good - and when you finish you can share your result as an emoji grid without spoiling a single answer.
