Click every country you have been to. The map keeps count, shows how much of the world you have seen, and turns it into an image you can share.

How the count works

The map counts 197 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations, plus Vatican City and Palestine, which are UN observer states, and Kosovo and Taiwan, which are recognised by many but not all countries. There is no single official number, and travel clubs use lists of anywhere from 195 to over 300 places, so treat the total as a sensible standard rather than the final word.

Territories such as Greenland, Puerto Rico or French Polynesia are drawn on the map but not counted separately, because they belong to another country. French Guiana counts as part of France, for example.

Why this map uses the Equal Earth projection

Most world maps use the Mercator projection, which makes countries near the poles look far bigger than they are. On a Mercator travel map, a trip to Norway would look like a bigger slice of the world than a trip to Nigeria. This map uses Equal Earth, an equal-area projection, so every country is drawn at its true relative size and your coloured-in area is an honest picture of how much of the planet you have seen.

What counts as visiting a country?

There is no official rule, but most travellers use something like this:

You set foot in the country and went through, or could have gone through, border control.
A connecting flight where you never leave the airport usually does not count.
A day trip across a land border does count for most people, even if it was short.
Visits as a child count, whether or not you remember them.

Download image gives you a picture of your map with your total, sized to look good on social media. Copy link gives you a link that shows your map to anyone who opens it, without changing their own. Your list is kept in your browser, so it is still here when you come back on the same device.

How do I make a map of the countries I have visited?

How many countries are there in the world?

There are 193 member states of the United Nations and two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine, which gives the commonly quoted figure of 195. This map also counts Kosovo and Taiwan, for a total of 197.

Is my list saved?

Why is the map not the usual shape?

It uses the Equal Earth projection, which shows every country at its correct relative size. The familiar Mercator map exaggerates countries near the poles, which would make some trips look much bigger than others.
