Why utility poles?

Power and phone poles are one of the best clues for telling countries apart in street photos. Each country's power companies use their own materials and designs: concrete or wood, holes or stripes, neat or tangled wires.

Pole Spotter teaches those clues one photo at a time, from famous ones like Adelaide's Stobie poles to hard look-alikes like Japan and South Korea. 12 levels, 21 countries, real photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pole Spotter free?

Yes. Levels 1-6 are free for everyone. Levels 7-10 need a free account, and levels 11-12 are for GeoFun+ players.

Does this help with GeoGuessr?

Yes. Utility poles are one of the classic clues GeoGuessr players use to tell countries apart. Pole Spotter trains you to spot them quickly.

How can I tell Japan and South Korea apart?

Both use round concrete poles. Japan often has a yellow-and-black striped guard near the ground and plates in Japanese script; South Korea has thick loops of black cable and Hangul signs nearby. Levels 7 onwards test exactly this.

Where do the photos come from?

From Wikimedia Commons, under free licences. Every photo shows its author and licence, and the full list of credits is below the game.

How do stars and points work?

All right earns 3 stars, one miss 2, at least half 1. You earn points for each new star, so replaying a level for the same stars earns nothing extra.
