Neighbors - The Country Borders Game

Neighbors is a free geography game about land borders. Each level shows you one country on the map, and you name every country that touches it. Portugal has one neighbour. Russia and China have fourteen each. You get five lives, and a hint if you are stuck.

Why Play Neighbors?

  • Learn where countries actually sit next to each other
  • Remember borders far better than staring at a map does
  • Levels ramp from one neighbour to fourteen
  • Type in your own language - country names are localized
  • Earn points towards your explorer rank

Game Features

  • 154 levels, one country each
  • Five lives per level, plus an optional hint
  • A map of the region, with a hide-borders hard mode
  • Autocomplete that accepts common alternate names
  • Progress saved across devices once you sign in

About Neighbors

Neighbors turns the world map into a memory game. You are shown one country, highlighted on a map of its region, and told how many countries border it. Name them one at a time. A wrong guess costs a life, and so does asking for a hint, so five mistakes end the level. Land borders count - two countries are neighbours if they share a land boundary, which is why Denmark has exactly one neighbour and the United Kingdom has exactly one too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a neighbouring country?

Two countries are neighbours when they share a land border. Sea crossings do not count, so Britain and France are not neighbours in this game, but France and Brazil could be argued either way - French Guiana borders Brazil, so both answers are accepted there.

How many lives do I get?

Five. Every wrong guess costs one life, and asking for a hint costs one as well. Guessing a country you already found is free.

What happens when I run out of lives?

The level ends and the countries you missed are revealed. You can retry it as many times as you like, and the next level unlocks either way, so you never get stuck.

Do I need an account?

Not for the first seven levels. After that a free account keeps your progress, unlocks the remaining levels, and lets your completed levels follow you between phone and desktop.

Which country has the most neighbours?

China and Russia are tied at fourteen each. Brazil leads the Americas with ten, and Germany has nine - the most in Europe outside Russia.

Can I type country names in my own language?

Yes. The game is available in nine languages and the autocomplete accepts localized names and common alternates, so "Allemagne", "Alemania" and "Germany" all work.
