Why road signs?

Road signs are one of the most useful clues for telling countries apart in street photos. Most of Europe uses red-bordered triangles, the Americas and Australia use yellow diamonds, Sweden and Finland fill their triangles with yellow, and the word on a stop sign changes from STOP to ALTO, PARE or 止まれ.

Sign Spotter teaches those clues one photo at a time, from famous signs to hard look-alikes like Australia and New Zealand, or Spain and Portugal. 12 levels, 36 countries, real street photos.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sign Spotter free?

Yes. Levels 1-6 are free for everyone. Levels 7-10 need a free account, and levels 11-12 are for GeoFun+ players.

Does this help with GeoGuessr?

Yes. Road signs are a classic GeoGuessr clue: a yellow diamond, a yellow-filled triangle or the word on a stop sign can narrow the country down in a second. Sign Spotter trains you to read them quickly.

Which countries say ALTO or PARE on stop signs?

Mexico says ALTO. Brazil, Argentina and Chile say PARE. Most other countries say STOP, Quebec says ARRÊT and Japan uses a red triangle with 止まれ. Level 7 is all about stop signs.

Where do the photos come from?

From Mapillary, a street-level photo site where people share pictures under a free licence (CC BY-SA). Every photo shows its author and licence.

How do stars and points work?

All right earns 3 stars, one miss 2, at least half 1. You earn points for each new star, so replaying a level for the same stars earns nothing extra.
