Country Hangman
Spell a hidden country at every level. Start with the easy ones and work your way up to the trickiest names on the map - one letter at a time.
Each level is a different country. Clear a level to unlock the next - the names get harder the further you go.
About Country Hangman
Country Hangman is a classic word-guessing game with a geography twist. Instead of random words, every level is a real country name. The early levels stick to familiar countries, and each one you clear unlocks the next - so the names get longer and tougher the deeper you go. Reveal the country letter by letter before you run out of lives, and work your way through every nation on the map.
How to play
- Pick a level from the grid - each one is a different country.
- A hidden country name is shown as blank tiles, one per letter.
- Tap letters on the on-screen keyboard (or use your physical keyboard).
- Correct letters fill in every spot where they appear in the name.
- Each wrong letter costs one of your six lives for that level.
- Spell the country to clear the level and unlock the next one.
Why play
- Learn and memorize country names from every continent.
- Sharpen spelling and pattern recognition.
- Track your progress as you clear level after level.
- Quick to pick up, hard to put down - perfect for a brain break.
Countries from every continent
The levels span the whole world. Early on you might be spelling out a familiar name like France, Japan, Brazil or Egypt, and later levels have you puzzling over Kyrgyzstan, Liechtenstein, Eswatini or Suriname. The number of tiles is a clue in itself: short names such as Chad, Cuba, Mali and Peru hide far fewer letters than Bosnia and Herzegovina or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
How to guess country names faster
- Open with the common vowels. E, A, I and O turn up in almost every country name.
- Once you can see the shape, test frequent consonants like N, R, S, T and L before anything risky.
- Watch the endings. A lot of countries finish in "-land", "-ia", "-stan" or a plain "-a".
- Read the tile count. A short five-letter gap rules out the long names and points you toward the likes of Spain, Italy or Qatar.
- Hold the rare letters (J, Q, X, Z) until the pattern gives you a reason to spend a life on them.
Frequently asked questions
How do levels work?
Each level is a single country to spell in hangman style. You get six wrong-letter lives per level. Clear a level to earn a checkmark and unlock the next one, and keep going until you have worked through every country.
Do the countries get harder?
Yes. Early levels use well-known countries, and the further you progress the more the game mixes in longer, less familiar names.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Completed levels are saved on your device, and if you play across devices your unlocked levels follow you so you can pick up where you left off.
Which countries are included?
Every level is a real, internationally recognized country, drawn from across all continents.
Is Country Hangman free?
Yes, Country Hangman is completely free to play in your browser, with no download required.
What are the best letters to guess first?
Start with the vowels E, A, I and O, since nearly every country name contains at least one. After that, try common consonants such as N, R, S, T and L, and watch for endings like "-land", "-ia" and "-stan".
Is Country Hangman good for kids and the classroom?
Yes. It is a simple, screen-friendly way for students to learn how country names are spelled and where they sit on the map, and it works well as a quick warm-up or geography review activity.
Do I need to download anything or create an account?
No. Country Hangman runs in any modern web browser on desktop or mobile, with no download, install or sign-up needed.
